People can’t possibly adopt and advocate any new ways of working when they are still clinging to the old ways.
When introducing change, celebrate what has gone before. Bank what went well, bin what didn’t. Then move on, leaving the past behind you and space in front of you – for colleagues to co-create the new ways of working.
Keep talking
It is important to keep talking during a time of change to reinforce the reasons for it and to celebrate progress.
Often, during times of change, leaders make the mistake of thinking ‘there is nothing new to say, so I’ll say nothing.’ This often leads to ill-informed gossip that slows down the change effort, perhaps even derails it.
Communicating your strategy
Before you get all creative with a magical corporate visual metaphor to communicate your strategy or other major change, think about the three basic steps.
- First, be clear about the messages you want to get across
- Second, be clear about the audiences you most need to communicate with
- Thirdly, get your new messages out there, ideally through a new and unique method, to reinforce the change.
