Tips & tricks: Cynic-proof your story

When coming up with a metaphor to get people talking about the big picture for your organisation, make sure it’s cynic-proof so it doesn’t trigger the wrong kind of storytelling.

Pick an analogy that hasn’t been used in the organisation before and isn’t closely related to your business. For instance, if you’re in the airline industry, don’t show the strategy as an airport or flight. Otherwise, folk will be more concerned about whether the shape of the 747 winglet is right than the journey the business is meant to be on.
