To attract the next wave of talent, your organisation needs to adapt – and fast. So says Axiom’s Christina Dolding

Move over, Gen Z! The next big cohort of workers is on the horizon. They’re called Generation Alpha.

Born between 2010 and 2025, these young people are growing up in a world where technology, education and society are shifting faster than ever before. While Gen Z set the stage with their social media savvy and digital fluency, Generation Alpha will take things to a whole new level.

With the first of this generation poised to enter the job market in the late 2020s, companies need to begin thinking about how to attract and retain these future workers. Growing up in an era defined by rapid technological advancements, global connectivity and a heightened awareness of social issues, Generation Alpha will bring with them a new and unique set of demands.

Advanced tech

Generation Alpha have been immersed in the digital world from day one. With artificial intelligence, virtual reality and automation part of their everyday experience, they’ll expect their workplaces to be equipped with cutting-edge technology that facilitates collaboration and enhances productivity. Outdated systems will be a deal-breaker.

Flexible working

Flexibility will be non-negotiable for Generation Alpha. Having witnessed the shift to remote work during their formative years, they’ll prefer jobs that allow them to work from anywhere. Digital tools that facilitate flexibility will be essential, as will policies that support a healthy work-life balance.

Positive impact

Generation Alpha are growing up caring deeply about global issues like climate change, economic inequality and social justice. They will seek employers who are not only aware of these issues but are actively working to address them. Companies with a strong commitment to social and environmental causes will have the edge in attracting new talent.

Beyond earning a salary, Generation Alpha will want to know their work is making a difference. They’ll gravitate to companies that contribute positively to society and are transparent about their impact. For them, a job is not just about income; it’s about purpose.

Continuous development and growth

In a world where technology and industries are changing at an ever increasing pace, Generation Alpha will put a premium on lifelong learning. They will expect employers to offer continuous upskilling opportunities, allowing them to stay ahead in their careers.

One-size-fits-all career paths will not appeal to Generation Alpha. They will look for personalized development plans that fit their unique strengths and aspirations.

Inclusive workplaces

Inclusion is no mere buzzword for Generation Alpha; it’s a core value. This generation has grown up in a world that celebrates difference, and they’ll expect their employers to do the same, properly embracing DEI.

Workplaces that promote diversity and actively work to protect gender, racial, cognitive and other forms of equity will resonate with Generation Alpha. They will expect to feel a sense of belonging and see real, measurable progress, not just rhetoric.

Transparency and trust

Transparency will be key to earning the trust of Generation Alpha. They will expect clear and open communication from leaders, especially in decision-making processes. A culture of transparency through genuine Psychological Safety.

Autonomy and creativity

Generation Alpha will want the autonomy to contribute to the organisation in their own way. Micromanagement will be a turn-off for this independent-minded generation. Instead, they’ll excel when they have the freedom to take charge of their work.

In particular, the opportunity to be curious, creative and innovative will matter to Generation Alpha. They’ll be attracted to workplaces that grant them freedom to try out new ways of doing things.

Generation Alpha: The challenge ahead

What can today’s leaders do to prepare?

In short, it’s time to start understanding and preparing to meet the distinct demands of Generation Alpha.

Your workplace needs to be technologically advanced and flexible. You’ll have to offer opportunities for continuous learning. Your organisation needs to up its game on social and environmental impact, diversity and transparency.

Prepare to meet these expectations and you’ll be in pole position to attract the next wave of talent.
